Memory Mattress

Memory foam is an innovative visco elastic foam material that returns to its original shape once pressure is removed. It was originally created by NASA. Private industry now uses the material in the production of the memory foam mattress and other padding.

A memory mattress is fundamentally different from a conventional spring mattress. A memory mattress is visco-elastic: visco (from viscous) means that the mattress compresses when you apply your body weight; elastic means it returns to its original shape when you remove the weight. Another unusual characteristic is that memory foam is temperature sensitive. Your body heat helps your memory mattress conform to the pressure points of your hips, shoulders, knees and elbows. Theoretically by sinking deeper to conform to the pressure points your spine will remain straighter and your entire body will be more evenly supported. This should help relieve pain and discomfort from back-pain and arthritis. When you change positions while sleeping your memory mattress will also change its shape. The end result for many people is a better night’s sleep. Be aware, however, that visco elastic foam mattresses are not recommended by the VA for persons with disabilities.

Memory mattresses are graded by pounds per cubic foot of material. Mattresses with more dense material grades are firmer. A 200+ pound person would likely be more comfortable on a memory mattress graded at 5 pounds per cubic foot. Thinner memory mattress are graded at 2.5 to 3.5 pounds per cubic foot.

Most memory mattresses are constructed in layers. The base layer is often 5 inches thick or more with one or several layers of thinner material attached permanently on top of the base layer. Different brands distinguish themselves by the density grade of the memory foam and by the combination of different layering thickness and materials. When you see an ad for “X” inch memory foam mattress be sure to check the number of layers.
